It’s that time again! February 15, 2009 is the second annual 26.2 with Donna in Jacksonville, Florida!

100% of race proceeds go to breast cancer research and women living with breast cancer. 

I will be jog/walking (more so walking) the 1/2 marathon.

I would love to get a team together!  I will be designing an “Anything But Dependent/milspouse” T-shirt with the breast care awareness ribbon to sell. Everything I make over the cost of the shirt will be donated at the Marathon.

I coach a U-11 Coed Basketball team on base.  I love it. I have 9-11 year olds and this age group keeps me moving and laughing. I encourage the kids to pick whatever name they want for their jerseys. This year’s team is unique to say the least.  As I stand in front of the shirt guy today to place my teams order, he is reading down the list . . .”Convicted?” he says. “Yes”, I reply. “Is this Bobbles, or Bubbles?” he asked in a concerned and confused voice. “That would be Bubbles,” I said. “So, Monkey, Bubbles, Convicted, Blade, The Man, Super Man, Spooner, and Kaylee,” He says. “Yep, that would be my team”, I sighed.  He chuckled along with the others in the office and all I can do is smile. These kids are awesome! Hopefully none of these names are foreshadowing to what their future holds.

Stupid, Stupid, Stupid.  That’s what I keep telling myself.  I have really change my eating habits over the last few months.  I’ve been reading labels, buying fresh fruit and veggies every week and making out weekly menus so that we never have to guess what to make for dinner.  It has been WONDERFUL.  I eat 6 times a day.  I am never hungry, I have plenty of energy and I never have that full bloated feeling of eating too much.  Even the kids and husband have gotten use to eating the whole wheat bread and pasta!  We are all eating better and it shows!  Tonight we had Violin practice, then straight to Basketball practice.  After Basketball we splurged and stopped at McDonalds.  I told myself walking in, that I would have a fresh salad, fruit, and unsweetened tea.  I kept saying it to myself over and over in my head as if I would forget. But when I got to the counter, my brain didn’t connect with my mouth.  My mouth said, two cheese burgers with Big Mac Sauce and a Dr. Pepper, PLEASE.  Then I got excited that my mouth won over my brain! YES!! I enjoyed every bite.  It was amazing!  Then, I felt guilty.  And now, two hours after I ate it I feel sooooo stupid, because my stomach is literally churning over and over as if my food is looking for a way out.  I FEEL TERRIBLE!  What was I thinking!?  I now see that my body does not want McDonalds.  I can’t even eat it every once in a while because it now makes me sick.   I need a FFA group (Fast Food Anonymous).  I need to be able to call them when I’m in the Drive thru lane. . .

• ME: dialing 1-800-McFatty
• FFA: Hello, Fast Food Anonymous
• Me: -deep breathing- low, soft voice- “I’m in the drive thru lane. . . again”
• FFA:-fast and concerned voice- Have you paid yet??
•  Me: Um. . .uh. . .FFA: Yelling, “IT DOESN’T MATTER”!!
•  Me: . . . starting to hyperventilate
•  FFA: Calm now and speaking slowly- Just turn your steering  wheel to the right  and slowly pull away from the establishment. . .
• ME: Ok, ok, I’m pulling away. . .Thanks FFA, I owe you guys!
• FFA: No, Mam, we’re just doing our job, have a great day .

This was an unplanned visit. My parents are coming in from St. Louis and don’t seem to get that this is work, not a vacation for me. They will be leaving freezing weather for my warm sunny porch and I will be getting ready to have two adults in my house which I must tote around to practices, games, and rearrange my schedule for work and play. I did politely inform the planner of the two, which would be my Mom that this wasn’t as good of a time as originally thought and that I would rather them come at a later date. With that said, they decided to still come now. If I knew I could say, “don’t come” without causing a family uprising, I would. I think a may have an anxiety attack, but other than that, I’ll make it through.

Why is it so hard to tell Parents NO?? Maybe it’s the whole they gave me life and oh yeah, I’m Catholic! Ever heard of Catholic guilt!? lol

Now, I can look forward to my Dad Falling asleep on the couch with the TV up too loud and telling the kids they are too loud and he can’t hear the TV.  While my Mom sits and looks at me and complains she can’t breathe (asthma) in my house and blames air fresheners, candles, the dogs, and plants….

“When did you start wearing cardigans and khaki’s?!” That’s what my husband asked when looking at a picture of me in a pair of low rise hip hugger jeans and a very snug little t-shirt with the words “charmer” across the boobs. I wanted to throw my Kate Spade Flats at his head.  ”I still have those jeans and that shirt”, I exclaimed! What I didn’t divulge is that I can’t fit one leg into the pants and the shirt is more than snug. Later that night I flipped through the photos myself. When did I take the detour down Mom Road? I have decided that I will not go quietly! I am not going to fade into wearing pearls and loafers. I won’t do it. I consider myself a pretty stylish person, at least I thought I was. SIGH.  Maybe I can be both?  Yes, that will work! But the question still stands, When did it start?  Hmmmm……My worse nightmare is being one of those women in the back of the magazine with the black bar over my eyes that says, “DON’T DO THIS”!  

The other thing I noticed is the the color of my Bras and underwear have slowly started to fade to beige. I was reading in some book that this isn’t healthy for a marriage and that I should be buying sexy, stringy things that don’t have 4 in wide straps. My husband has hinted a few times when seeing a red lace bra in the catalog. But it is sooooo much easier to have beige! it goes under everything!!!  Uhhggg!  It doesn’t make sense. It’s not like I wear it to bed. But, for the sake of it, I am going to go to Victorias Secret and test this theory. It’s supposed to make you feel sexier wearing prettier things….I’ll let you know if it’s true.  I need to go now to test the theory before Homecoming. Because frankly, the husband won’t care if I am wearing a rice bag as a dress. ; )

I’m going shopping!

Wow. I can’t believe it’s 2009. With the husband deployed over half of 2008, it went by faster than it should. Which is good during a deployment, but when I looked at my children today and realized how big they are getting it was a bitter sweet feeling. When we are missing our spouses, we want the time to go by as quickly as possible. We’d be OK with blinking and months passing by. I guess it’s a fine line of wanting to be with our loved ones, but living a full life. Sometimes we are in such a rush that we forget that we won’t get this time back. One day, I am going to wake up and my kids will be grown and gone. I have a feeling that I will regret the thoughts of wanting the days to be shorter. It’s hard. I want my husband home, but at the same time I don’t want my life to pass me by. I guess the only way to deal with both is to take it one day at a time. Don’t look at it as weeks or months. They will go by without you counting them. Just live each day to it’s fullest. Which is hard for a wife thinking, “The faster I go to bed, the faster tomorrow comes.”
Many of us are making New Years Resolutions. Most of us won’t keep them. I’m not going to try and do anything spectacular, just enjoy my family. My resolution is to make memories and take as many videos and photos as possible. Because, when my husband and I are sitting in our rocking chairs some day, I want to have those items to remind us of all the amazing things we have done. And to go a little deeper, I am going to be in all the pictures I can. Strange resolution, huh? Well, I hate having my picture taken. I mean really, really, hate it. I’m sure a therapist could link it to some child hood trauma. But, this year I had a “moment” and realized I am doing a terrible thing. My husband and I are young, just shy of 30. And this last year we have watched friends and acquaintances pass away that were our age. It is tragic and unfair. And when family pulled out the pictures and videos I realized how much those things meant. And even if my husband and I live to be 110 years old, I want to have those memories. I want my children to have those memories. Who knew they were so important.
2009 will also be a new chapter for my family. We just hit 8 years in the Navy and will be going to shore for the first time. I am ecstatic. My only concern is what do I do with my husband when he doesn’t leave after a couple months? It has been over 6 years since we have lived together longer than 4 months straight. We tease that he will drive me crazy and that after three years of shore, we’ll be begging to go back to sea. I will get a ton of writing material from this experience! But, in reality, we can’t wait to coach youth sports together, be able to plan vacations, and just have dinner every night together. These are simple things taken for granted by so many civilian families. I guess it really is the little things that can make you happy.
My advice for the New Year would be to keep the resolutions simple. Don’t make it a job. Enjoy your self, family and friends. And remember that you are not getting any younger! The advice I am giving myself is to breathe more. I want to be with my children and husband and just take it all in. I will take a deep breath and save the memory. And last, I am going to take each day as it is. I’m not going to rush it. In fact, I’m going to hold on to it as long as I can. Whatever is happening in your life, whatever chapter you are in, I hope you have a great start to your New Year.
